The longer read-together version

The Youngest Brother

David was the youngest son in a busy family. His older brothers had important work, but David was often sent to the hills with the sheep. The hills were wide, the days were long, and most people never saw how carefully he worked.

David learned that small jobs are still important when someone depends on you.

The Unseen Watch

David looked for green grass, clean water, and safe paths. At night he listened for trouble. When danger came near the flock, he did not run away. He stayed close, called the sheep together, and led them toward safety.

Courage grew in David long before a crowd ever cheered his name.

Songs on the Hill

David carried a harp. While the sheep rested, he practiced songs of thanks, hope, and trust. The hills became his quiet classroom. He learned to notice clouds, water, animals, and the goodness of God.

The music he practiced alone would one day comfort a king.

Samuel Comes to Visit

One day the prophet Samuel came to David’s home. David’s strong older brothers stood before him, but God reminded Samuel that people notice the outside while God sees the heart.

David was called in from the field. He still smelled like grass and sheep, but God had seen his faithful heart all along.

Back to the Sheep

David had been chosen for future work, but he did not stop caring for the sheep. He returned to the hills and kept serving. A promise did not make him too important for today’s job.

He would grow into a leader because he had first learned to be faithful with a flock.
